“If God created everything, then who created God?”, this is one of the fundamental questions of atheists. A simple and straight forward answer is that ‘no one created God’. There are many verses in the Bible, but I will quote one:
Before the mountains were born, or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. (Psalm 90:2)
A created God and other religions
The concept of a ‘created God’ is an integral part of non-Judeo-Christian religions. I have excluded Islam, because it came very late in the picture, about 600 years later than Christianity.
When you read the Qur’an very closely, you will notice that it either reiterates many of the Biblical themes or tries to present its own version of the events.
Concerning other religions, all gods were created at some stage by something or someone else. So, the concept of a created God is not alien to other religions.
A created god and Christianity
However, Christianity presents a different picture of God. The God of Christians is not a created god but the Creator himself. He is infinite. He is God everlasting. There is an interesting verse in the book of Job, the oldest book of the Bible.
‘Who is this that darken my counsel with words without knowledge? Brace yourself like man; I will question you, and you shall answer me. Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me if you understand’ (Job 38:2-4).
God is making an authoritative statement that He is the Creator, not a created God. ‘I AM who IAM’ (Exodus 3:14). ‘I was there is the beginning and I AM the beginning’ (John 1:1).
He is infinite, he is eternal.
Do the concepts of infinity and eternity make any sense?
While it is easy for the human mind to grasp the concept of a created God, how can one rationalize the concepts of infinity and eternity?
Infinity simply means a state of limitlessness in terms of time, space and quantity. It is a well-established mathematical and scientific concept and no one, including atheists, has trouble in accepting it.
If you ever attended school, you probably have learned about infinity, especially in your Maths class.
For example the number set is infinite. There may be people who will argue that certain sets are not infinite. A few years ago, I asked someone to give an example of infinity. He responded, “My dreams and hopes”.
You see, the problem is not with the concepts of infinity and eternity. Instead, the problem lies in our attitude in accepting God as eternal and infinite.
So who created God?
So, who created God? No one created god, especially the God worshiped by Christians. God has always existed and always will be.
In line with the concept of infinity, God is infinite and limitless, not bound by time, space and quantity. He is the Creator, not the created. (62)
